During January the ship enjoyed a holiday standdown period followed by an upkeep period at Pearl Harbor, HI. In February the USS SARGO completed the upkeep and conducted local operations out of Pearl Harbor before participating, in March, in RIMPAC 78. In April USS SARGO conducted local operations out of Pearl Harbor and in May completed an upkeep in Pearl Harbor. In June USS SARGO conducted Inport Type Training, successfully passing an Operational Reactor Safeguards Examination on 14 June 1978. |
From July through September USS SARGO conducted a restricted availability and drydocking at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard. |

In October the USS SARGO conducted Inport Type Training and Weapons Systems Accuracy Testing training, and in November conducted MK48
recertification firings. Also in November the USS SARGO conducted local operations and Prospective Commanding Officer Operations.
In December USS SARGO conducted a Pre-Overseas Movement (POM) Upkeep. Awards presented in 1978 were a highlight in PATROL Magazine: |

“USS Sargo will be well represented in the United Airlines 30-30 Race this Sunday, September 3. “Sargo is fielding two individual runners in the 30-kilometer race and two teams in the 30-mile relay race. “Executive Officer LCDR Leonard Passmore, who ran the race last year, and LCDR Mike Camp, who is making his debut in long distance running, will carry the Sargo banner in the 30-kilometer race. “Representing the Wardroom in the 30-mile relay race will be LT Paul Bienhoff, LTJG Dave Cherry, LTJG Danny Mills, LTJG Charlie Martin and ENS David Newberry. “The enlisted team in the 30-mile relay includes ETR2(SS) Michael Lathrop, MM2(SS) David Erhart, ST3(SS) David Franz, RM3 Roger Heater, MM2 Kevin Flannagan, and ETN3 Lee Peterson. “In early August Sargo challenged other SUBRON SEVEN to enter the race, but as of press time none of the other crews had picked up the gauntlet.
