Ralph Berry IC3(SS)(1970 – 1972) passed along these photos from his time on board. He wasn’t sure of the dates that the photos were taken so they are included with the 1970 collection (captions comments by Ralph Berry):

A British Sub (HMS Finwhale) that the SARGO was tied up to in Singapore. "I don't know how this boat was able to submerge, the superstructure had hundreds of empty beer kegs lashed down inside of it."

Somewhere out at sea during a swim call. The guy flexing was the corpsman, can't remember his name. Some of the guys referred to him as "Quack." That might be Alan LeMarquand "Frenchy" MM1(SS) just forward of the muscleman.

Thomas F. McClure ET1(SS)(1970 – 1972) shared the following:

"During the transit from Hong Kong to Pearl Harbor in Feb 1970 we were about half way thru the transit when in the middle of the day we suddenly surfaced after coming to periscope depth to copy the broadcast, then there was a 1MC announcement for a MAA with rifle to report to the Bridge, those of us who were sitting in Crew's Mess were looking at each other wondering what the hell? The next announcement was for 'Swim Call for all off duty Watches' which answered that question. Needless to say that there was a mad dash to Topside. It is a bit weird to go swimming when it is two miles to the 'mud' bottom. I believe that the last two color photos in the second row of color photos from Ralph Berry [shown above] shows this 'Swim Call.'"

The USS SARGO spent March conducting an upkeep in Pearl Harbor, HI.

In April Navy Commendation Medals awarded to LCDR Thomas R. Yeatts, Engineer Officer and MM1(SS) John M. Ball; Navy Achievement Medals to LCDR William J. Honadle, Navigator, LTJG Patrick C. Thompson, 3M Coordinator, RMCM(SS) Donald Cole, C.O.B., and ETCS(SS) William B. Blackburn.

In May the USS SARGO conducted local operations in the Pearl Harbor area, including PCO operations and successfully completed an Operational Reactor Safeguards Examination (ORSE).

In June USS SARGO completed an INSURV inspection during upkeep and then recommenced local operations in the Pearl Harbor area. USS SARGO was also awarded the Fire Control “E” (her second).
