  Master Chief Cole was born in Oakland, California on March 31, 1934. Following his graduation from High School in Mt. View, California, he joined the Navy in June 1952.

After completing basic training he served on the Staff of Commander Blockade Forces KOREA. Leaving this staff in 1954 he attended Radioman "A" School and served on the Staff, Commander Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet and in USS NEREUS (AS 17). On 14 October 1957 after attending Submarine School in New London, Connecticut, he received orders to USS POMPON (SSR 267), USS CUTLASS (SS 478), and changed homeports from Norfolk, Virginia to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on the USS MEDREGAL (SS 480) serving as the leading Radioman. In January 1960 he returned to Staff, Commander Submarine Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet for duty serving as Message Center Traffic Checker. In July 1963 he reported to Radioman "B" School in San Diego where he graduated first in the class and received orders to USS ROCK (AGSS 274). His next assignment required him to return to Service School Command, San Diego, reporting on 24 August 1965 for duty as Leading Instructor and Administrative Officer. On 1 April 1968 he reported to USS SARGO (SSN 583) where he served as Chief of the Boat. In November 1970 he began his final tour of active duty with the staff of Commander Submarine Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet as Message Center Chief until his retirement on 11 July 1972.
